人生のそれぞれの時期は、それ自体独立したものであるとともに、次の時期のための準備期間でもある。子供時代と青年時代は、大人たちの現在の都合や、自分がのちに大人になった時の必要のために犠牲にするにはあまりにも貴重なものであるが、もしそれらの時代がそれ自体のためにのみ生きられるならば、のちの人生は惨めなほど貧しいものとなり、将来きっと苦い後悔を味わうことになるだろう。現在に割り当てられるべきことと、将来に割り当て得られるべきことの程よいバランスをとることは、めったに容易ではないが、常に最も大切なことなのである。
