私の暮らす北国の町は例年になく冬の訪れが早かった。確か初雪は11月の中旬で、これは珍しくない。いつものように、積もるのは年を越してからだと見ていたのだが、寒さは次第に厳しさを増し、12月になると町はすっかり白く化粧したのである。クリスマス前に完全な雪景色となったのは私の記憶だと20年振りぐらいのことだ。
