「イタリアといえばトマト」という印象が一般にはあるが、トマトの原産地はイタリアではなく南米である。さらに、イタリアでトマトが食用とされるようになった歴史はたいへん浅い。せいぜいこの二百年あまりにすぎないのである。イタリア料理の原点が古代ローマ時代にさかのぼることを思えば、「昨日」からの付き合いのようなものなのである。

「トマトはイタリアにある」という意味の文章で、
ニュアンスが大分ことなります。

ここでは、「イタリアといえばトマトが有名だ」
といいかえることもできると思います。

としてみました。
speaking of...　「～といえば」

(C)have
主語は複数形です。

(D)hundred
hundred, thousand, million, billion
といった単位に数字がつく場合、複数形にはなりません。
複数形になるのは、
「数百もの～」hundreds of...
「数千もの～」thousands of...
というときです。

(E)On the other hand
慣用表現で、handはいつも単数形です。
